My Christmas in November has come and gone but I seriously could not have asked for a better weekend! If you follow me on SnapChat (username: taye-nicole) you got to see live updates of this weekend’s festivities. The weekend started with a cocktail hour and continued with two days of shopping, networking, workshops, and keynotes. It was seriously beauty bliss.
The highlight of my weekend was probably my conversation with Danessa Myricks, artist and entrepreneur. We chatted for quite a while about her products, issues brown girls face in the beauty industry, and the importance of representation. She was the most humble and encouraging person I’ve ever met. Also, the girls on her team are beyond dope, I’m so excited to see more from them. She launched her new lash line, Elevation Lashes, at The Makeup Show this weekend and they’re very pretty and affordable. Styles range from natural to ultra dramatic so there’s something for everybody and every occasion.
On Day 1 there was a media preview where esteemed makeup artist James Vincent, Director of Education and Artist Relationships for The Makeup Show, shared more information about the exhibitors, weekend mission, updates, and products to look at for. His talk was very inspiring as he spoke more on really convincing the industry to develop the beauty scene in the Midwest (specifically Chicago). I thought this was very important because opportunities are scarce as most people typically seek artists from the East and West coasts before they consider the Midwest. The career fair on Saturday was a major point of interest as it was specifically designed to bring opportunities to Chicago artists. That’s amazing! He also acknowledged the time change for TMS Chicago (it’s usually in June) by letting us know the date was changed to accommodate artists who are more active during wedding season in Chicago. This time of year fits better and gives more people an opportunity to attend. This was the biggest TMS Chicago thus far, kudos!
James Vincent also spoke on diversity in the industry (there was also a keynote on this topic) and working with brands who are committed to building their product range to accommodate more women of color and ethnic backgrounds. This brought me to chatting forever with one brand in particular, Melange Beauty, that has developed a selfie technology to custom match foundation shades. You simply download their app (only available on iOS right now), take a selfie, and they send you five samples to try before your purchase the shade you like best. I got to test out the foundation and it was very lightweight with a demi-matte finish. They literally had a shade for the palest to the darkest woman. I’m here for it!
Static Nails is another brand that was really popular over the weekend. The brand was founded by a 21 year old, she’s still in college! They’re reusable nails that can be used up to 6 times, designs vary and they include matte, super blingy, or natural looking. You can shape these nails anyway you like and simply pop them off and store them until you’re ready to wear them again.
My second day at the show was more about picking up products I missed on Day 1 and simply seeing all that I could see. My favorite part was definitely the diversity keynote about building more and demanding more diversity in this industry. The standard of beauty has to change and it’s awesome that the artists are committed to seeing that change. One question I still have is, if the artists are all for more diversity and representation, where is the pushback coming from? Why are big brands afraid of this? I met more than enough people who I’m sure will continue this conversation with me so it’s a post for another day.
One of the super cool parts of the weekend was the goodie bag I received! Here’s the big picture and a list of the items included is below. I also purchased quite a few items and that will be a separate post.
