Whenever NYX announces a new product the beauty junkies get excited, myself included. I don’t see many other brands garner the same hype as NYX and I think that’s amazing considering they’re easily accessible and have great price points. It was no different when they announced they were joining the liquid lipstick game with the Liquid Suede Cream Lipsticks.
These were available online in July and will officially be in Ulta Stores on September 24th. I just so happened to stop in my local Ulta and found the display so I picked up a few to share here and test out the formula.
Doll up your lips in plush and vibrant color! Our Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick glides on and sets into a striking matte finish. Velvety soft and waterproof, this long-lasting lippie creates a positively polished look with every swipe.
I picked up three shades Stone, Soft Spoken, and Vintage. Stone (deep gray with blue undertone) was a must-have because the shade is so unique yet wearable, with the right liner this one is going to slay! Soft Spoken (mauve nude) is an everyday nude for me and I’m really into these mauve toned nudes right now; they give off a clean fresh look but still kind of edgy. Vintage (plum with mauve undertone) came out more brown than plum on my lips, and deep berry on my arm swatch; the color doesn’t wow me so I’ll play with it over time to make it pop.
As far as texture, these took a while to dry down on my lips and the formula is what I’d consider a creamy matte. This is not a Sahara desert ultra dry matte formula, which can be good thing if you need to give your lips a slight break from mattes but still want that type of finish. Additionally, they smell like paint or some other type of lacquer. The scent goes away after a few minutes but it’s pretty strong right out the gate. After about 6 hours of wear, Vintage was nowhere to be found on my lips; it didn’t flake, settle into my lip lines or stain my lips, it simply disappeared. Stone on the other hand, left a gray tinge on my lips that kinda made it look like I’d eaten a blue popsicle.
Although the tube is bigger, you’re actually getting less product in the Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick than in NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream (.13fl oz/4mL vs .27fl oz/8mL). I think that’s important to know because the liquid suedes cost about a dollar more depending on the retailer.
To wear, I applied two coats evenly to my lips. A little trick, you have to apply this to each lip without taking the applicator off your lip. You basically have to swipe one lip, swipe the other lip, let dry for a few seconds then go back in with another coat if you wish. That way I got an even opaque application.
Overall, I like this collection because of the unique and vibrant colors but I don’t love the formula. There are other brands with truer mattes; Even NYX’s own matte lip creams are better. NYX could’ve released new shades of those instead of a completely new product.
